Volunteering

Out Loud students are worldly wise!  They are also very conscious of contributing to their community and to this end, many of them do voluntary work.  That work varies widely – you’ll see some of it here over the next few weeks and gradually the page will build to include many diverse roles that Out Loud students take.  
 
One of the ways that two of them have volunteered is to work with an Out Loud senior medals group – unpaid, because it’s voluntary! – for their Duke of Edinburgh awards.  They help me and the assistant/s listen to Impromptu speeches and also listen to delivery of prepared speeches as we move towards the exams.  
 
Some volunteering adds to the type of work the student would like to do as a career – for instance, working in a medical facility if planning on being a doctor; others volunteer to support their DoE work.  Others simply like to help out charities and community groups, or their sports clubs, for instance.

I started Out Loud in year 7, but had no idea just how much it would grow to become such an integral part of my life. Patricia is an amazing teacher whose support and guidance, along with the dedication and diligence of the assistants, meant I felt encouraged and uplifted throughout my journey at Out Loud. I learnt many lessons that I still highly value, like thinking on the spot while under pressure, and am so grateful to all their hard work in being constant figures to rely on. I have, through volunteering, gained an invaluable insight into the level of organisation and dedication that is needed in each week of Out Loud, and am so glad I am a part of that. Volunteering for Out Loud felt like the perfect way to give back to the Out Loud community. I enjoy helping others work towards their goals and offering constructive feedback. Out Loud has provided an ideal learning environment for me, and I would like to do my best to do the same for others. I am so thankful to Patricia, and the entire Out Loud team. They truly have touched so many peoples’ lives, including mine, and have demonstrated time and time again their unwavering devotion to the students of Out Loud.

Simone, please tell me a little about your DoE journey – 

  1. You volunteer for Out Loud for Silver DoE?  How has that benefitted you?
    I’ve gained experience on how to help students improve confidence/public speaking abilities
  2. Last term you were at South Street Arts Centre on a Tuesday … and this term, here …Sindlesham Court – what have you learned at each venue? The students in the groups at South St were close to each other as at the same school, and already cohesively working together but at Sindlesham Court I’ve been able to watch students get closer to each other as didn’t know each other that well before
  3. What do you enjoy about DoE?
    Opportunity to improve skills you didn’t know you had e.g forced to go camping. 
  4. What are you planning to do for Gold DoE?
    Physical – hockey
    Volunteering – care home
    Skill – henna
  5. And tell me a little about yourself … what year are you?  What have you chosen for GCSE?  Do you have siblings?
    I’m Year 10, 15 years old.  For my GCSEs I chose further maths, geography, computer science, stats.  I have an older sister. Part of air cadets and play hockey, I want to become a doctor.
  6. And what’s your favourite food?  
    Cheesecake
  7. What career do you want to do in the future and why?
    Army doctor because get to help people as well as every day is different. Link to air cadets.
  8. What do you like to do for fun?
    Watching movies at the cinema, meeting friends and going for walks.
